As we continue to move through the fall semester toward Reading Week, we have continued to ask our new graduate students about their aspirations and motivations. Today Keaton Peterson shares insights on his research goals, passion for chemistry, and journey to U of T.
Keaton Peterson
Bio: Keaton did his undergrad at McMaster University where he got his Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc.) in biochemistry. During that time, he worked in Jakob Magolan's lab developing antibiotic adjuvants. Currently, Keaton is in Amanda Hargrove's lab synthesizing small molecules to target disease-relevant RNA.
Home Campus: UTM
Research Group: Hargrove
Area of Study: Organic/Biological Chemistry
What branch of chemistry do you specialize in, and how did you come to choose it?
I specialize in organic/biological chemistry. I chose it because I love doing synthesis, and I think it's also really cool to see my chemistry being used directly for biological applications.
What are you looking forward to most as you began your graduate studies here at U of T?
I am looking forward to the freedom to conduct my own long-term research project that has the potential to advance the growing field of RNA targeting.
Who is your favorite TV or movie scientist?
My favourite depiction of a scientist is Doc Brown from Back to the Future. Great Scott!
