"It seems the time has come for metal atom chemistry to once again shine," says Ozin in "Single atom catalysis—Back to the future". He cites important advances and a surge in single atom chemistry and catalysis R&D over the past decade as evidence of a resurgence, a comeback from a long period during which this research area lay all but dormant, awaiting a breakthrough.

Ozin takes readers through the history of single atom catalysis and in particular the discoveries of recent decades, predicting an exciting future.

"The breakthrough that the field of metal atom chemistry and catalysis had promised and patiently awaited," he writes, "has now spectacularly been realized."
