Chemistry Undergraduate Excellence Awards announced for 2022-23

March 5, 2024 by Alyx Dellamonica
The Undergraduate Studies Committee of the Chemistry Department is proud to celebrate the achievements of 26 students who will be the recipients of 18 different awards for the 2022/23 academic year, according to Professor Andy Dicks, the committee's chair.

Each year a subcommittee of the departmental Undergraduate Studies Committee adjudicates the awards made to Chemistry program students who have demonstrated academic excellence," explained Dicks, whose fellow committee members were:

  • Nicole Treston (Undergraduate Program Advisor)
  • Madeline Gerbig (Departmental Librarian)
  • Jon Abbatt (Professor)

"Winning this scholarship is a confirmation that my efforts in terms of studying and gaining practical experience are meaningful," said Jelena Golijanin, recipient of two awards. "It has reinforced my motivation to improve and to continue to pursue chemistry beyond the undergraduate level."

Golijanin added that the fact that the intricacies of the atomic world were responsible for almost all of the functionings of the macroscopic world initially drew her to chemistry. Another appeal was its creativity and interdisciplinary aspects. "My favourite part is running experiments, as I get to observe many compounds with many different properties, such as colour, luminescence, smell, shape or reactivities."
