Three researchers from the Faculty of Arts & Science, including two from the Department of Chemistry, have received honours from the American Geophysical Union (AGU) for outstanding contributions to Earth and space sciences.
A new article from the Department of Arts & Science profiles Jonathan Abbatt and and Barbara Sherwood Lollar, along with their fellow honoree Debra Wunch from the Department of Physics, in celebration of the AGU honour. Abbatt's research group consists of analytical, environmental and physical chemists who study the chemistry of processes involved in environmental change on global and local scales. Sherwood Lollar has expanded both fundamental science and practical applications in environmental chemistry and geochemistry. This has profound implications for our understanding of the Earth, the chemistry of groundwater, planetary science and astrobiology.
December 2023 lectures by both professors--the Jacob Bjerknes Lecture in Abbatt's case and Sherwood Lollar's Carl Sagan Lecture, are also linked via the AGU.
The A&S article notes that the AGU is a diverse and inclusive global organization of professionals working in the Earth and space sciences. Its goal is to advance discovery and solution science through programs that include scholarly publishing, convening virtual and in-person events and providing career support.
